STALEMATE ENDED AT CRICKLEFIELDS 2nd September : Ilford 0-0 Witham Town aet ( Ilford win 3-2 on penalties) FACPr Ilford reached the first qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time in 8 years with a workmanlike display in overcoming Witham Town in this preliminary round reply. Ilford for the most part controlled large parts of this game with only the visiting keeper and profligate finshing keeping the result in doubt up to the 120th minute Walton made 4 changes from Saturdays team with Liam Thomas, Chuck Duru, Bogdan Idu and Sam Adejokun all making the starting eleven and this seemed to have the desired effect as Ilford started strongly as the game followed the pattern of the first encounter with the foxes geater possession seeking to unlock a well organised Witham side who relied on the quick long ball out of defence and quick free kicks and throws. After 17 min Duru brought a smart save from Eld in the Witham goal but the vistors replied quickly after just heading over from a corner but Ilford continued to look the more threatening and Eld was forced to make another save from Adejokun after he controlled , turned and shot following a pass from Sawyer. Sam Taylor for the vistors always looked dangerous on the right had side and his mazy runs threatened to produce dividends but it was a long ball out of defence which caught the foxes dozing just before half time but when a well directed lob was required, as in the first game Witham's finishing was found wanting and the effort cleared the bar. The seconmd stanza saw much the same pattern as the first with both defenses on top but a snap effort from Idu from 20 yards was held by Eld who continued to be the much busier of the two keepers. A smart move which started out on the left by Sunday saw the ball played acroos the box to Sawyer who with only the keeper to beat blazed over the bar but Ilford were then fortunate as on the hour mark a Witham corner was glanced onto Budd's near post before being scrambled clear. Still the game ebbed and flowed and an inch perfect 25 yard pass from Idu put Adejokun clear but hotly pursued by two Witham defenders the striker showed his lack of match fitness by driving the effort wide. Simpson then headed over when unchallenged from a Sawyer free kick and as Duru was replaced by Hawtin a free kick then fell to Adejokun unmarked on the left hand side of the goal but the striker again pulled his effort wide. With minutes to go before the end of the 90 Costache then took matters into his own hand and launched a drive from 30 yards out that took a wicked bounced which forced Eld to aain push over the bar. Extra time saw neither side managing to break the deadlock as Coulson replaced Adejokun and the 6ft 3 in striker 's boisterous style quickly drew a yellow card. The change had the desired effect of shaking up Stopher and Manning in the Witham defence as he proceeded to create chaos and mayhem in the last 20 minutes as reflected by the Witham's dugout imploring the referee to limit his challenges. However it was Witham who almost stole the tie when with seconds remaining a cross from the left found their player unmarked 10 yards out but his effort was met with a spectacular save from Robb Budd it what was his only save of the game. The penalty shoot out at the Dagenham end of the ground saw Witham's convert their first tut Cosmin Costache blotted an otherwide perfect performance by driving stright at the keeper. Budd then made amends by saving Witham's second and Idu made it 1-1 as the first four penalties were all directed at the left hand side of the goal. Witham then made it 2-1, Sawyer then had his effort saved and Budd continued to leave his mark on the Witham players and supoorters by saving their fourth with McCarthy who had been brought into the action with two minutes of play remaining for just this purpose level things at 2-2. It was now sudden death but whose nerve would hold out ? Certainly not Witham as with Jimmy Greaves again in attendance their fifth spot kick was touched onto the post by Budd and with fingernails down to the bone Hawtin kept his cool and slotted the fitth one in to make it 3-2 and progress Ilford through to face Maldon &Tiptree at home on September 11 (budd, sawyer, trice, thomas, costache, simpson, idu, sunday, duru(hawtin),adekokun(coulson),nyama(mcarthy)
